Staying positive during quarantine

What a year it has been! It has taken a lot for nearly everyone to stay positive over the crazy of the last year. I have had some really amazing things happen to me since quarantine (got legally married and obvi the amazing experience of the beginning days of Diem) but there has also been some tough ones; having to postpone my wedding to what feels like indefinitely, not being able to see my friends and family and losing someone really close to me.

There have been some things that I have changed about my lifestyle that have really helped me stay positive during quarantine and living in a global pandemic.

Staying Fit

I have never really LOVED working out but always just kinda did it. However, during this pandemic, working out has been my lifeline. It started when I was living back home in Upstate NY with my dad, brother and his family at the start of the pandemic. It was a scary and overwhelming time. I couldn’t see my fiance, had just co-founded a company and was helping with my brother’s kids and cooking for the family every day. One day I went outside for a walk and literally just started running. It was AMAZING. I felt freer and happier than I had in weeks.

After that day, I started running every day and began to start every day with a run. I found myself happier, less stressed and absolutely loving it. When I came back to city-life, it was harder to run at first, so I started running doing at home workouts which I started to also love and have fun with!

Eating Healthy

Very early on in quarantine, I realized how critical it was to eat healthy and have healthy foods at home. Previously if I had unhealthy food at home, I rarely ate it because I was at work most of the day. Being home all day, having some chips or chocolate in the cabinet is way more enticing when you are looking for something to munch on.

I had to figure out some healthy snacks to have on hand that were satisfying and quick. My favorite snacks are:

  • Popcorn cooked on the stove with just a little oil and salt

  • A date with almond butter and cocoa powder or a couple of mini chocolate chips

Taking Care of my Skin

Mask wearing has really forced myself to focus on my skin. Suddenly my skin was breaking out under my mask and my under eye circles were the focus of my face. I picked up a few things to keep my skin happy during quarantine.

  • Change out my mask every day and wash my masks after every use (this is so critical)

  • Using a toner daily and especially on days when I have been wearing a mask a lot

  • Under eye patches are a lifesaver and so refreshing

  • Treat yourself with skin tools (I love my gua sha and jade roller)

Making time for myself

As crazy as it sounds, one of the things that has helped me the most is taking time for myself. I realized that because I am always in close quarters with my family or partner, I was never really just taking time for myself. Now almost every night, I take out just 20 minutes to just focus on ME and no one else. This means time to read, listen to a podcast, watch Netflix or work on a puzzle. I light a candle, sip on a cup of tea and just take out some time for myself.

Getting Ready

This one sounds silly but I found it really important to my mental health. I make sure to get ready every day. Even if that just means putting on some workout clothes, I make sure to do my hair, put on some make up and even some jewelry if I am up to it. It really makes a difference in how I feel mentally when I put the effort into getting ready.

Get outside

Living in a city, getting outside in a global pandemic can be kind of anxiety inducing but I realized it is so critical. I make sure to go out even if it’s just for 10 mins around the block and I always feel better about everything after. On days where I am feeling extra nervous, I’ll try and go out earlier in the day when less people are out and that always makes me feel at ease.
