I tried the Infamous Aztec Healing Clay Mask & Here Are my Thoughts
Okay. Here's the situation.
I have combination skin, that's definitely a little dehydrated. I am incredibly prone to blackheads, and get them on my cheeks and chin like no tomorrow. ince the beginning of quarantine, I've noticed that the constant wearing of masks has aggravated my skin, and I've been seeing new blackheads pop up on my skin like no tomorrow. Seriously! So I took to Google and searched up and down for a mask that would cure my of all of my skincare woes. That's when I came across this fantastic guy. It's not the first time that I've heard about Aztec Healing Clay, and if you're anything like me, it's probably not yours either.
What is this, you may ask? Good question. This mask contains one ingredient only, calcium bentonite clay. Calcium bentonite clay is an absorbent kind of clay that's a result of the ageing of volcanic ash. According to Healthline, "this clay has a unique composition and can absorb “negatively charged” toxins. People have been using calcium bentonite clay for centuries as a way to detoxify the body, improve digestion, improve skin tone, and more". With that, it's completely additive, fragrace and paraben free. We love that! #cleanbeauty.
TL;DR: Buy this product!
I had to buy it. It was calling my name! The likes of Lilli Reinhart + Mindy Khaling swear by it.
I got it the next day, thank you Jeff Bezos, and instantly tried it utn. It was 14.95 for 1 lb, so about 0.93 an ounce, which is not bad at all. You wouldn't need more than an ounce per use, so it evens out to less than 1$ per mask.
From my research, i.e. reading through the 1000s of articles and comments that have been written about this mask, I learnt that the best results for people with combination skin have been from people that have mixed the powder with Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) before applying it to my skin. Aztec Secret recommends mixing the clay with equal parts of apple cider vinegar or water. I chose apple cider vinegar because it was a favorite amongst others. Some people do add honey for added hydration! So that may be worth a shot.
I washed my skin with my handy dandy Cerave SA Cleanser. I love it because it doesn't strip my skin, and it gently exfoliates my skin, breaking down any sebum, dirt, or excess oil that I may have built up throughout the day.
Then, I mixed the mask with some ACV. The instructions on the back were pretty straight forward. For some reason, it states that you shouldn't use any metal utensils to mix the mixture, so I stick to using my reusable plastics to sort this one out. I like my mixture to be on the thicker side, so I add less ACV, but it's completely up to you! Whatever you find suits your skin the best. Trial and error it to figure it out.
Top trick! Mix it in a sandwich bag to reduce mess. Saves so much clean up time, thank me later. To apply it, I cut the corner of the sandwich bag and use my fingers. Nothing too crazy, but it gets the job done!
I leave the mask on for about 10 minutes, until it dries completely. That's also what Aztec Secret recommends, I did find that when I put the mask on, my skin pulsates a little. I love it! Means it's working.
Then comes the hardest part, rinsing it off. Honestly, this is a little harder to take off than other masks that I have used in the past. My trick is to wet a face towel with hot water, sit it on my face for a few seconds, and then wipe. It loosens the clay a little, and prevents cracked mask ending up all over the place. Then I rinse it off as per usual, add my serums and some HA moisturiser, and rosehip oil, to add some hydration back in to my face. This mask does leave your skin a little dry feeling!
Immediately after, I noticed that my skin looks fresh and glowy, my pores were nearly non existent. The days after, I tend to break out a little but with whiteheads, so I know it's bringing all the junk in my skin to the surface, which is great. I love using this write around my period, when I have hormonal acne or when my blackheads are completely out of control, this mask does wonders for taming and clearing my skin.
VERDICT: Overall 9/10 would recommend. Does leave my face a little dry, but this has become a household staple, and I swear by this mask! Also some reviews say that this works great for cystic acne (maskne), eczema, and more.
