411: Her cancer cells are the source of the first immortalized human cell. Basically, her cells last forever. She unknowingly donated her cells to Johns Hopkins in 1951 and was the only human cell line able to reproduce indefinitely. This was one of the most important cell lines of medical research and nicknamed "HeLa" cells (from the first two letters of her first and last names). They're now used to study the effects of toxins, hormones, drugs, viruses all without experimenting on humans. They've allowed scientists to learn more about the human genome, how viruses work, and they play a crucial role in the development of the polio vaccine.
